Product Data Coding System

Design and commissioning of a Balogh data coding system which was installed on an existing assembly line for Black & Decker, Spennymoor.

The assembly line was controlled by three Allen-Bradley SLC500 PLC’s which were connected over a DH485 network, the system also included two PanelView 900 operator displays.

Ten code reader stations were installed at strategic points on the line and were interfaced to the existing PLC systems. A Balogh read only tag which had it’s own unique code number was fitted to all pallets on the line. All data handling was carried out within the PLC’s with storage areas being allocated in memory to retain the operational status of each pallet.

The main objective in implementing this system was to identify screw failures from two automatic screwdown stations and to graphically represent the failed screws at the repair station PanelView display. The system also enabled the electrical test data for each product built to be displayed and recorded.

The implementation of this system enabled the line operators to make effective and consistent repairs to any reject product.
